Liverpool’s end of season revival failed to land them a place in Europe for next season as they were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa at Villa Park on the final day of the season.
Stewart Downing scored the only goal of the game after he converted Marc Albrighton’s cross. Raul Meireles came the closest to grabbing an equaliser for the reds but his effort was clawed away brilliantly by Brad Friedel.
The game had the usual end of season feel and it failed to really spark into life at any stage but James Collins almost added a second for Villa.
Despite a largely poor season Villa managed to finish in a respectable ninth-place and ended the season unbeaten in eight games. The same can be said for Liverpool who ended the season strongly despite two defeats in their final two games. The reds can look forward to what might promise to be a strong season next year, if the club spends wisely.
