Liverpool have reportedly tabled a bid of £5 million for Arsenal’s French left-back Gael Clichy.
Clichy, 25, has 12 months remaining on his current Arsenal and has told that he wishes to leave the club this summer. Arsene Wenger would be unwilling to lose Clichy on a free transfer next summer so may decide to cash in on the pacey full-back.
Left-back has been a problem for Liverpool for several years and Kenny Dalglish has identified Gael Clichy as the man to solve the problem for the reds. Liverpool’s Director of Football Damien Comolli was the man who bought Clichy to England as Arsene Wenger’s scout at Arsenal and now the Frenchman is keen to bring Clichy to anfield.
Glen Johnson played the second half of the season in that position and performed admirably but he would like to revert back to his natural righ-back berth. With Paul Konchesky not winning over the Liverpool crowd and Fabio Aurelio constantly in the treatment room, Liverpool have made finding a settled left-back a priority this summer.
