Steven Gerrard has promised Liverpool fans that he will return to his very best form next season and he claims he is desperate to return with a bang for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Gerrard was sidelined from March until the end of the season and had to watch from the stands as his team-mates ended the season strongly. He was even spotted among the Liverpool fans for their final day fixture away at Aston Villa.

The Liverpool captain underwent surgery on a long standing groin injury in April and with the success of the surgery behind him, Gerrard is now ready for the new season to begin.

In an interview with the official Liverpool website, Liverpoolfc.tv, he said: ”I want to come back with a bang, I want to have a big season.”

“It’s been non-stop football for me since I started when I was 17. I’ve never had a period of more than four or five weeks out of the game, so it’s been nice to rest mentally. You don’t want to miss games but when you’re watching them it gives you that edge, that buzz to get back. I’ll come back hungry and hopefully there’s a very productive season ahead for me.”

Gerrard has also admitted that Liverpool’s aim for the new season is to challenge for the Premier League title. Seeing Manchester United overtake Liverpool with 19 titles has made the Liverpool faithful even more determined to lift the league trophy next season.

Gerrard said: ”As a Liverpool fan and a player it’s frustrating when you see your arch-rivals lifting trophies but you’ve got to give credit where it’s due. They’ve won it, they’ve overtaken us.

“Now the challenge for us is to equalise. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got a squad capable of going into the season and competing with Manchester United.”

Naby Keita Liverpool

Liverpool chartered a private jet to fly Naby Keita to the UK overnight after the Guinea midfielder picked up an injury during an African Cup of Nations game against Rwanda, according to the Mirror.

The report adds that the midfielder picked up a hamstring injury and had to be piggy-backed off the pitch since there were no stretchers available.

Sega Diallo, a local journalist, tweeted that Keita did not know about the extent of his injury. His translated tweet read (h/t Mirror):

“Already on the way to the airport @NabyDeco does not know if it’s serious. He will do an exam as soon as he arrives @LFC. He doesn’t think it’s too serious.”

Keita is the latest player to have picked up an injury in the international break. Mohamed Salah limped off while playing for Egypt while Virgil van Dijk was sent back to Liverpool after helping the Netherlands beat Germany 3-0 in a Nations League game.

James Milner picked up a hamstring problem during the Manchester City draw but could play for the Reds against Huddersfield if he takes part in first-team training, according to the Mirror.

Even with the injuries, Liverpool should start the game against Huddersfield as favourites. The Reds should have the squad depth to deal with injuries this season but hopefully, none of our players will be ruled out of the clash on Saturday.

Adam Lallana Liverpool training

Liverpool face Huddersfield this weekend and even though a number of our stars are away with their national sides, the Reds have a decent squad preparing for the weekend’s clash.

Jurgen Klopp was all smiles in the training which saw several youngsters mix up with some of the senior members of the team.

Adam Lallana, who has struggled for fitness this season, was back in training and looks set for a spot in the starting XI.

Another Englishman who is having a great season is Daniel Sturridge. The striker has scored some vital goals for us such as the ones against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

Sturridge could be in the running for a place in the starting XI for the Reds if he keeps his form up, but we got a glimpse of another striker at Liverpool.

Divock Origi was hard at it in training as the Belgian tries to break into the first-team and get some important minutes under his belt.

Joel Matip impressed in our win over Southampton recently, and he was snapped during the session with Lallana.

Nathaniel Clyne has found it difficult to get enough minutes, thanks to the rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the experienced Englishman seemed to be in a great mood during training.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have been handed a triple boost ahead of their game against Huddersfield on Saturday. The Mirror reports that Virgil van Dijk, James Milner and Mohamed Salah are certain of being fit for the Premier League game.

Milner had injured his hamstring in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City and was expected to be out of action until December, as per the report.

However, the Englishman has made a remarkable recovery, and the report adds that Liverpool’s medics have given him the all-clear to make a comeback.

Milner has to take part in full training on Thursday to have a chance of making it to the team for the Huddersfield game.

Salah and Van Dijk also had injuries during the international break. However, the Egyptian only has a slight muscle strain while the Dutch defender has been dealing with a rib injury that requires pain-killers, as per the report.

The forward is returning to Liverpool for further treatment and should participate in full training before Thursday, according to the Mirror.

Ronald Koeman shed light on Van Dijk’s problem and was quoted by the Mirror as saying:

“He spoke to the manager. The medical staff of the Dutch national team spoke to the medical staff of Liverpool and made the decision that he was playing only the Germany game and then after back to Liverpool.

“He is ready to play next weekend.”
