Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard shared which player needs cover in the winter window. The legend was speaking to BT Sport and stated that Jordan Henderson is the player that needs cover.
The current Reds captain has been an ever-present player in the Liverpool team this season but he was missing from the team in their last game against Sunderland. The Merseyside club didn’t do all that well as they drew 2-2 and could lose further ground as the Blues face Tottenham in a derby.
Henderson has been the engine for the side and not having him in the side has surprisingly hurt the team. Gerrard also shared that the Reds need to sign another central defender in the window.
“Definitely a back-up for Jordan Henderson as a holding midfielder and another choice at centre-half.”
Henderson hasn’t just been a great passer of the ball for the side but has done a lot of running around and has even protected the defence to an extent. The Englishman was missed in the last game and his ankle injury could prove to be the biggest problem for Klopp’s side in the winter window.
The Reds were six points behind Chelsea but the blues do have a game in hand and could extend the gap to eight points by the end of this game week. The Reds seem to be losing their grip on games rather easily as they have lost crucial points to teams such as Bournemouth, Sunderland and West Ham recently.
Had the Merseyside club done well, they could have been tied with the Blues but Klopp might still be looking to finish the season on a high. The German had been linked with a move for Mahmoud Dahoud but the German youngster isn’t leaving his Bundesliga side at the moment.
Klopp does need to be smart with his moves in the transfer window. The German has been decent with the players he has brought in but he has to act fast. There were injuries to Daniel Sturridge again and with Sadio Mane leaving for the African Cup of Nations, Liverpool are short on first team quality for the rest of the month of January.
It will be interesting to note just how long Henderson could be out of the side and Klopp will hope the former Sunderland man returns back to the side as soon as possible. Liverpool need to keep the pressure up on the Blues but if they keep slipping up like this, they won’t be winning the Premier League title this season.
