Liverpool have had a frustrating time in terms of bringing players in during the current winter transfer window. Jurgen Klopp had also recently stated that clubs aren’t willing to sell their players in January despite the club’s best efforts.

However, there seems to be some good news coming in from Portugal as A Bola (h/t Metro) claims the Merseyside club have sent representatives to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon. The 24-year-old Portugal international has made 18 league appearances for the side and even lifted the 2016 European championship with his national side.

The rumour is being debunked by a few journalists in England as not only has Carvalho not been on the radar of the Merseyside club but the Portuguese star has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United for a number of years.

This does seem to be a bit of a desperate move from the tabloids to link Carvalho with Liverpool, especially with Klopp revealing his struggles into getting players. The Reds have unsuccessfully tried to bring in players such as Christian Pulisic and Mahmoud Dahoud, and have been linked with a number of other stars as well.

A good match for the Premier League

Carvalho does seem to be perfect for the Premier League as he is built for the league. The 24-year-old plays in the heart of midfield and has a great ball control and passing range and ability. He might not be the best when it comes to tackling but Liverpool don’t really play with a system that needs a tough tackling midfielder in the team.

If the Reds are to bring Carvalho over to the Premier League, they would have to fork out a pretty hefty amount. Reports claim that the Portuguese club is asking for a fee of around £26million, which actually is a paltry amount, given the standards of Premier League fees being paid.

The 24-year-old might be a surprising signing for the Reds akin to the Georginio Wijnaldum transfer saga and the Dutch midfielder has done pretty well for the Merseyside since joining from Newcastle at the start of the season.

Liverpool needs to bring in quality to keep their Premier League season going after a poor 2017 with only one win so far. The Reds have a chance of turning things around as they face Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg and then also have an FA Cup game before hosting Chelsea.

Should the Reds fail to win in all of those matches, it could turn out to be a disappointing season and then even the top four could look a little out of touch.
