Football is a funny sport that often comes up with a number of weird and quirky stats that get your head scratching. While anomalies in the game, like Leicester’s Premier League win, will remain as part of history and be cherished by the majority of supporters, there are records that some just don’t want to remember.
While Jurgen Klopp has been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League and has taken Liverpool to another level, his record after 81 games is similar to another footballing legend. We aren’t stating that Klopp has a similar record to Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger after they joined a Premier League club, actually, Klopp has the exact winning record after 81 games as Louis van Gaal did at Manchester United.
The Dutchman did state he was retiring from management earlier in the month but his time at Old Trafford would be remembered for some rather bizarre press conferences, him falling over in front of the referee and well boring football.
As the Mirror reported, the duo won 50.6% of their games after when in charge of possibly the two biggest rivals in English football.
The only basic difference between the pair is that Klopp actually got a couple of draws more than Van Gaal. The German has drawn 24 games and lost 16 while winning 41 while Van Gaal has picked up 41 wins and has drawn 22 games while losing 18.
The records certainly are the same but there has been a lot more work done at Liverpool with lower amounts of money spent. We can’t forget that Manchester United ended up buying the likes of Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay and Angel di Maria during the time of Van Gaal and even had the flop show that was Radamel Falcao.
Liverpool brought Klopp in after the summer window last season and the German only dipped into the coffers this season by bringing in his players. Even the second half of last season, the Reds concentrated more on cup football as they tried to win the Europa League and the League Cup.
Manchester United did pick up silverware under Louis van Gaal but the boring brand of football was one reason why he got the boot at the end of last season. Even FA Cup glory isn’t enough for a person to keep his job but this certainly was not a stat that Liverpool fans would have hoped to see, especially at this stage of the season.
