Liverpool are monitoring one of the rising stars in Germany with the Daily Mail claiming that Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the summer.

The 21-year-old Germany U21 international has been in great form for the Bundesliga newcomers and has scored 14 goals and provided six assists in the league. His form is one of the primary reasons why Leipzig are the closest competitors to Bayern Munich and even though the title hopes seem fading, they could be playing in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool do need a new striker up front as they have played with Roberto Firmino at the top of the attack this season. They don’t really have a better option at the moment with Divock Origi being played in the absence of Firmino.

Daniel Sturridge is expected to leave the club in the summer and Klopp does need to address a number of other positions. The lack of world class players in the side affected the performance of the team and Klopp’s refusal to add players in the summer was one reason why they slipped out of the top four and a couple of cup competitions.

Werner certainly has found his shooting boots at Leipzig but more importantly he can play out wide as well. The German would provide a great option to have should Sadio Mane or Philippe Coutinho not play in the first team and could also play at the top of the attack.

Another reason why the Reds are this interested in him is the fact that the 21-year-old plays for a side that is known for Gegenpressing as well. Leipzig are known for their high pressing game as well and credit must also be given to manager Ralph Hassenhuttl, who pushed him into a striker’s role.

The onus is now on Liverpool to make it to the Champions League as Werner’s current club are set to take part in the tournament next season. Liverpool do have a chance of finishing in the top four but they need to win almost every game they play now and hope for a few of the other clubs to slip up and fall out of contention.
