A summer of change is to take place at Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp plans to bring in a number of players at the club. One position that does need strengthening is that of the left-back and the German paper Bild reports that the Merseyside club have made a move for Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac.

The 23-year-old had been linked with a move to Anfield in the winter window and with his contract coming to an end at the Bundesliga club; Kolasinac would be available on a free transfer in the summer.

This means that other clubs can negotiate with the Bosnia and Herzegovina defender and Liverpool are said to be one of the frontrunners for his signature.

It has been reported that Schalke have offered the left-back €3 million per year, but Kolasinac could end up getting close to €6 million per year according to some of the bids coming.

Kolasinac would be a great addition to the side and certainly better than Alberto Moreno, who has been frozen out of the side. Liverpool have played with James Milner in this position and the Englishman has done a great job but this is not his preferred role in the side.

The Schalke man does have a penchant for charging up and helping out the attack and that does show in his numbers. Kolasinac has chipped in with three goals and five assists in just 20 Bundesliga games this season, which is a pretty good number for a left-back.

Talking to This is Anfield earlier in the month, Fox Soccer’s Bundesliga expert Keith Costigan, praised Kolasinac as the ideal signing for the Reds in the summer transfer window.

“He is available on a free this summer, he is 23 and he has everything you would want in a modern full-back,” Costigan said.

“For me Kolasinac is ready now and he would come into the Premier League and be one of the best left-backs in the country, that’s how highly I rate him.”

Kolasinac can also play across the back line and can even move up to a winger’s role, should there be the necessity for the side. It is this kind of versatility that will attract a lot of teams for the signature of the defender and the Reds will hope they can put up a package that brings the player to Anfield.

The Reds have struggled in defence this season and signing a proper left-back will be a significant step in the right direction. The battle will be tough to sign free agents but Klopp had done it with Kolasinac’s former teammate Joel Matip and that does bode well for Liverpool.
