Liverpool’s transfer targets or rumoured targets seem to be dwindling with each day going by. The Reds had to deal with the blow of Mahmoud Dahoud deciding to move to Borussia Dortmund next season and the Merseyside club seem to have lost out on the signing of Inaki Williams as well.
The Spain U21 international had been linked with a move to the Premier League club for a while and it has been reported that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the attack-minded player. Williams can play across the front line and could have been a great option to have either as a striker or a winger.
However, the 22-year-old recently told reporters that he was happy at Athletic Bilbao and isn’t looking forward to moving anytime soon.
“I am calm, I feel very, very calm because I am very comfortable here. I have no intentions of anything. It is flattering that big teams are interested in me but I’m already at the biggest team and I want to continue my career here, hopefully for many years.
“I am calm. My agent deals with this things but I have always said that I am very comfortable here and that I am where I want to be. I am proud to come here every morning and be with my teammates and the coaching staff. I do not plan to make any changes and I do not worry about all these [reports] coming out.”
Bilbao had tied Williams down to a long-term deal in 2016 with a release clause of €50 million to ward off interest from other clubs. Juventus and Borussia Dortmund were reportedly interested in the star winger but the quotes from the player seem to have ended any doubts that he seeks a move away from the La Liga side.
Williams certainly would not have come on the cheap and his non-availability will be a big problem for Liverpool. Klopp does have other players on his radar and will have to work hard to get them in the summer.
