Lucas Leiva of Liverpool

Liverpool star Lucas Leiva has revealed his future plans and says that he will decide on it at the end of the current campaign. Lucas has been a long-serving player at Anfield and has been there since the 2007/08 season. He has made a total of 339 appearances and is in the 10th year of his Liverpool career.

Lucas’ contract expires in the summer and no new deal has been discussed with the player yet. This has created speculation about his future and a lot of confusion about his stay at the club beyond this season.

Lucas has played 29 times for the Reds this season and has a goal and 2 assists to his name. He has played his hand in helping Liverpool out in the absence of Lovren and has played 11 times in central defence.

His versatility is a huge asset to have in the squad and he would be a perfect squad player given the quality in the Liverpool squad combined with Lucas’ age. It is not known whether Klopp has the Brazilian in his plans but somehow, the midfielder is yet to extend his contract. Lucas told the reporters about his future:

“There is no doubt about my commitment to Liverpool, I just need to wait until the end of the season, work hard and make a decision together with the club. I have been here long enough and if the time comes for me to go somewhere else I think I will leave with the feeling that I did everything I could.

“I am getting to the stage of my career where I think I can help a lot, off the pitch of course, but on the pitch as well. Playing time [will play a part], I wouldn’t like to just be around. I feel I have many years that I can still play at the top level.  I need to analyse and see what is best for me and the club and then I am sure we will make a decision together.”

Though Lucas would be a great utility player for Liverpool, the player’s comments suggest that he isn’t ready to waste his time on the bench as he feels there is still plenty of football left in him.

It would be difficult for Lucas to get enough playing time next season as Liverpool would surely be making additions to their squad. We’ll have to wait to see if Klopp decides to offer an extension to Lucas Leiva.
