Well, this one was a bit surprising so we decided to take it with a pinch of salt. We have seen loads of news being reported and read but this one was an absolute shocker considering the possibility of such a happening.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been linked with a shock move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Eyebrows raised? It was the same with us too. According to Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Sports Mole), the Dutchman has emerged as a surprise target for Real Madrid, who are also supposedly chasing Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The Dutch midfielder joined Liverpool last summer for £25million and has become an important cog in Klopp’s plans. He has made 39 appearances this season so far and has scored 5 goals in all competitions. He also has 8 assists to his name and is a very valuable to Liverpool’s midfield. Apart from the goals and assists that he provides, he is a crucial part in Liverpool’s build-up play and is a vital player.

It is rather surprising to see Real Madrid getting linked with Wijnaldum as Real Madrid already have a lot of options in that position. The likes of Mateo Kovacic, Casemiro, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos are all central midfielders and there is no real necessity for Real Madrid to sign another player in that position.

This is currently Wijnaldum’s first season at Anfield and he has already established himself as a regular. It is hard to see as to why he would join Real Madrid and warm the benches there. He’d have to fight with Kroos, Modric, Casemiro and Kovacic for a place in Zidane’s XI.

It would be wise on Liverpool’s part and also Wijnaldum’s part to avoid any interest from the Spanish giants as things seem to be moving in the right direction. It would be totally unnecessary to sell a quality player and replace him. It is never a guarantee to find a player of Wijnaldum’s calibre for the same price as they’d sell him to Real Madrid for.

All in all, the news is quite absurd and it wouldn’t be the right thing to sell Wijnaldum if Real Madrid come knocking.
