Lucas Leiva of Liverpool

We’re in for a surprise with this one. Liverpool never fail to surprise us, do they? Be it transfer news or with the performance on the pitch, there’s a bit of unpredictability about the Reds these days.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has been linked with a move to the newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion. Eyebrows raised? That was the case with us too when we read it. According to The Mirror, newly promoted Brighton are plotting an ambitious move for the Brazilian, who doesn’t look like he is a part of Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans at Anfield.

Brighton were promoted to the Premier League as they finished as runners-up in the EFL Championship, behind Newcastle United.

Nevertheless, a promotion to the Premier League is a great achievement, especially when it is for the first time. Surely, they will be eager to avoid the drop next season and strengthening would be necessary. Lucas’ experience would be a valuable addition to any promoted club.

Lucas recently revealed in an interview that he always gives his best when playing for Liverpool and said he’d wait until the end of the season to make a decision on his future.

“There is no doubt about my commitment to Liverpool, I just need to wait until the end of the season, work hard and make a decision together with the club. If the time comes for me to go somewhere else I think I will leave with the feeling that I did everything I could. I think I can help a lot, off the pitch of course, but on the pitch as well. Playing time [will play a part], I wouldn’t like to just be around. I feel I have many years that I can still play at the top level.”

The Brazilian has made 30 appearances for the Reds and has stepped in as a central defender as well on an equal number of occasions as he has played in central midfield. He has been a utility player for Liverpool and we’ll have to wait to see what Klopp decides to do at the end of the season.

Do you think we need Lucas Leiva beyond this season?
