Liverpool have reportedly beaten Tottenham for Fortuna Sittard’s 17-year old defender Perr Schuurs for a trial at the club. The Reds seem to be looking to strengthen the academy and now a report has emerged on Dutch magazine Voetbal International (h/t football-oranje.com)

Perr Schuurs currently plays for Dutch club Fortuna Sittard and had reportedly attracted interests from Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, and RB Leipzig. Apparently, RB Leipzig and Tottenham had sent scouts to watch the 17-year old in action. However, it looks like Liverpool have stolen the march by offering the youngster a trial at the club.

It looks like there is no follow-up trial or a return visit to Anfield has been scheduled. The trial is aimed at facilitating Liverpool to have a closer look at the player.

Fortuna Sittard play in the 2nd division of the Dutch League and Perr has made 29 appearances for them this season in all competitions. Though Perr Schuurs plays as a central defender primarily, he has also made 7 appearances as a defensive midfielder. He has also scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in all competitions, which is quite a good return considering that he is a centre-half.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

Since the boy is only 17-years old, it would be wrong to call him a defender already, considering that he can also play as a defensive midfielder. While the versatility is appreciable for his age, it remains to be seen as to what position Schuurs will specialise in the future. However, one thing which is certain is that he is naturally defensive minded.

The Kop Times Verdict

If the right kind of effort is put into shaping this guy up, he would surely be able to develop into a versatile defensive minded player. Now that Liverpool have offered him a trial, the club wouldn’t miss out on signing the young lad if the staff feel that he is good enough to become a star in the future.

So everything now depends on how well the trial goes. We’ll have to wait to see what Liverpool decide to do with Schuurs once the trial is done.
