Liverpool are set to hand a huge war chest to manager Jurgen Klopp in order to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts next season (Independent.ie). The club returned to the Champions League for the first time since 2014 after finishing fourth in the league. While Liverpool will have to go through a playoffs in order to reach the group stages of the competition, it is widely expected that the Reds will not face any issues in the qualifiers that begin early next season.
One of the advantages for Liverpool has been the lack of European football, as Klopp has had to focus only on the domestic games. This has certainly aided Liverpool in contention with Arsenal, who finished one point behind despite a 3-1 win over Everton.
The Merseyside outfit have not been linked with big-money moves up until now. We have been linked with sensible names like Virgil van Dijk of Southampton, Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham, and Timo Werner of RB Leipzig. While these players are not superstars, they could be solid names in the squad. According to The Sunday World, Klopp has got a green light to spend a minimum of £100 million in order to sign these players. More players could be on the way to Anfield if the manager raises a substantial sum of money by the sale of Daniel Sturridge and Mamadou Sakho. Both players could be on the way out of Anfield, and they could generate around £30 million at the very least.
A 3-0 win over Middlesbrough helped Liverpool qualify for the Champions League. For long periods of the game, there was a lot of nervousness at Anfield – especially knowing that Arsenal were leading 2-0 against Everton. A goal just before half-time by Wijnaldum provided a huge sigh of relief, and the Reds were able to move forward and secure all three points through goals from Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana. The season ends with postseason friendly games against Sydney and Hertha Berlin. It would not be surprising to see Liverpool trying to complete as many signings as possible before the start of pre-season.
Several clubs have already shown that doing the business early in the transfer market helps get a strong start to the campaign, which can often have a huge impact on the table. This season, however, Liverpool were challenging for the title up until January. Yet, they faced an almighty struggle just to finish in the top four. Next season will be a great test for Jurgen Klopp, as he tries to assemble a squad that can fight on all fronts.
