Lucas Leiva of Liverpool

Lucas has been with us for a decade now and his commitment to the club has never been in question. Players came and players left but he has been one of the most loyal ones around at Anfield. He is such an underrated player and it usually is the case with the team players as they hardly get recognised for the sacrifices that they make.

Lucas Leiva has been linked with a move away from Anfield for a while now and the latest update on his future is that the Brazilian wants to move to Gremio, the club where it all began for the long-serving Red.

The versatile Brazilian midfielder has made 346 appearances across all competitions since moving from Porto Alegre to Merseyside a decade ago but could leave this summer in search of more regular first-team football.

The midfielder has been attracting interest from Gremio and even revealed that he turned them down in January just to complete 10 years at Liverpool. What a lad!

He was quoted by the Mirror,

“There was an offer from Gremio in January, but I wanted to complete 10 years at Liverpool. Now in the window we had a conversation, but nothing official. I do not hide my desire to return to Gremio, but there are several factors.”

Club president Romildo Bolzan Junior admitted in February that Gremio had made an approach to secure the return of a player who is “in the fans’ imagination”, but conceded that any deal would be very difficult to complete (Liverpool Echo). However, since the player is also interested in joining them, any complication involved should be solved.

Leiva has scored 7 goals in his entire Liverpool career and has 24 caps for the Brazil national team. Leiva’s contribution to Liverpool has been immense and he certainly deserves appreciation for the same. The 30-year old’s contract runs down this month and now that he has expressed his desire to join his former employers, we can only wish him good luck in his future endeavors.

All the best Lucas! Thank you for everything.
