Liverpool have the chance to sign Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez, according to reports in Spain. However, we are not willing to meet the asking price for the Colombian playmaker.

Spanish outlet Sport (via Metro), claims that Liverpool, along with a number of other clubs, approached Jorge Mendes, the agent of Rodriguez and were told that the 25-year-old was available.

The main stumbling block in the deal has been the valuation of the star from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which is rumoured to be around €75million.

Madrid president Florentino Perez wants to get rid of the 25-year-old but not many clubs are willing to spend that kind of money for a player who only started 18 games for the club last season.

The lack of first-team action has been a problem for Rodriguez ever since he made his big money move from Monaco and Zinedine Zidane also seems to be willing to let go of the talented attacker.

The report also claims that Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the player and a big battle will be on offer should Madrid clamp down on their high valuation of the player.

Rodriguez Not The Right Man For The Job

Rodriguez would be a great signing for any team that allows him to play with the freedom to express himself. Shackling him with defensive work would only hinder his effect on the game. While we would love to have someone like him in the side, we cannot afford to bring in luxury players.

The balance of our side would also be greatly affected and we already have a player like Philippe Coutinho who will be pulling the strings next season, possibly from midfield. FSG would also be wary of spending €75million for a player that failed to mark a real impression for his club last season.

There were claims from an insider at Melwood that we would be signing a big name player and that would blow the mind of all the supporters but it possibly won’t be Rodriguez. The Colombian does have a lot of potential and can get better but he has to move away from Madrid for regular football.

We don’t need to waste cash on him though and staying clear of the 25-year-old is the best thing we can do. Right now, we need solutions for our centre-back and left-back slots; something that Jurgen Klopp should be working on extensively rather than signing another attacker.
