Steven Gerrard Backs Klopp To Spring A Surprise And Compete ‘a couple of big signings’

Steven Gerrard has backed manager Jurgen Klopp to bring in a few more transfers before the end of the window, despite the fact that we have been frustrated in our attempts to sign Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have been able to add Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson to the side this season but with the first Premier League clash just a few days away, there still is a lot of work to be done if we are to continue our progress under the German manager.

Gerrard believes that we still have time bring talent in as the transfer window has three weeks left before it closes.

Speaking to BT sport, the former captain said (as quoted by Liverpool Echo):

“There is still time, three weeks to go. Last year, against the top six they were excellent and had a very good record.”

The Englishman even has high hopes that Klopp would be able to pull out a miracle and bring in a couple of big names before the window closes.

“In pre-season, they have looked very strong and with three weeks to go in the window, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jurgen has got a couple of cards up his sleeve. He might bring a couple of big signings in.”

A Frustrating Time In The Transfer Market

While Gerrard expects more signings to come in, we have had a tough time negotiating for the two players that were prime targets for Klopp. The German had earmarked Keita and Van Dijk as priority signings but we have been blocked by their respective clubs.

Should we not be able to add a central defender and another quality midfielder to our ranks, our entire transfer strategy has to be questioned and this would be a frustrating time for Klopp as well. We already have a tough task of repeating our top four finish from last season and with the other clubs buying big, we might already be behind in the race.

There is also the big question of the Champions League qualifying tie where we face the toughest opponents in Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga side are a difficult team to face and if we are not careful, we could be heading to the Europa League too.

This will be a testing few weeks for Klopp and his entire management staff but should we sign two or three more quality players, things won’t look that bad for us.
