Liverpool face a battle to keep James Milner but are adamant that they will refuse any bids for the utility midfielder in the January transfer window. As the former England international gets used sparingly this season, there are concerns that he could move towards the exit door soon.
However, as reported by The Telegraph, manager Jurgen Klopp feels that the 31-year-old is a vital cog in his team and is reluctant to entertain any thoughts of the player leaving in January.
Last season saw Milner being played out of position as a left-back. Being a team player, the midfielder never complained and even put in some great performances. However, this season saw him return to his preferred central midfield role.
But the competition for places in the Liverpool midfield is so intense that Milner isn’t able to command a regular starting spot. He made just two Premier League starts this season but Klopp is certain that Milner would be involved more in his team as the campaign progresses.
There is no substitute for Milner’s experience, who comes with vast knowledge of the Premier League. Together with his experience, his commitment and drive to excel makes him one of the best players any manager wishes to have in his team.
Milner is a role model for the club’s younger players and Klopp wants him to do that for a longer period. The former England international is very impressive at retaining possession and according to statistics, Milner has been successful with 88% of the passes that he has attempted this season.
That he has also created seven chances is a tribute to the all-round ability of Milner. In this era of specialists, it is rare to see such a selfless player who is ready to do anything for the team’s cause. To put in one word, he is a manager’s player.
No wonder then that Klopp is desperate to keep hold of Milner who could have sought a move last summer as a large number of clubs came calling for his services but he remained committed to Anfield.
