Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says he would like his former club to sign a strong midfielder similar to Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama. Wanyama has been in fine form for Spurs since coming back from a lengthy injury layoff. The midfielder made an impact in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield a few days ago.

Moments after coming from the bench, the Kenyan launched a rocket strike to silence the Kop in the riveting stalemate. Wanyama is strong, powerful and his robustness allows him to protect the Spurs’ back four with ease and give the attackers the license to express themselves freely.

Gerrard believes that the Reds should prioritise signing a midfielder with Wanyama’s qualities.

“I think Liverpool would benefit from a monster of a centre-midfielder, a holder,” Gerrard said on BT Sport (h/t Express).

“A Wanyama-type player who does sit in and is disciplined, and he would give more protection to the back four.”

With Emre Can running out of contract at the end of the season, our club certainly needs a new midfielder. Italian giants Juventus have been strongly linked with a free transfer move for him in the summer.

Gerrard seemed to suggest that the German midfielder could be on his way out of Anfield in summer once his contract expires.

“Well you’ll have to wait and see what happens because Emre Can’s leaving, obviously Keita’s coming in,” he added.

“But Keita is a No 8, Keita is a dribbler, and a runner. But the way he (Jurgen Klopp) plays he plays 4-3-3 more often than not. So you can accommodate a Henderson and a Keita.”

We actually need a strong and powerful midfielder in the mould of Wanyama, capable of protecting our defence and providing a base for the attackers to play freely.

Emre Can

Feels like Can is on his way out of our club as Gerrard seems to have spilled the beans. I still feel Klopp could persuade Can to stay put at the club as the German midfielder possesses innumerable qualities and can play anywhere in the midfield.

Naby Keita’s arrival in the summer would be massive; the Guinean is a midfield enforcer with the ability to dictate the tempo of the game.

Some really good days to arrive in summer but first, let us complete the season on a high.
