Liverpool to battle Tottenham for highly-rated 24-year old La Liga midfielder – reports

Liverpool could be looking to do some business with Barcelona again, but this time we would be looking to sign one of their midfielders rather than selling one of ours. A report carried by the Birmingham Live claims that we are going to battle Tottenham for the signature of Andre Gomes, who has struggled at Barcelona.

Reports from Spain claim that the La Liga leaders want to sell the Portuguese international, whom they only signed from Valencia a season and a half ago in 2016. Things have not worked out all that well for Gomes and he was subject to a number of transfer rumours at the start of the summer and winter transfer window too.

Gomes is 24 and has a lot of time on his hands to grow and fulfil his potential. Maybe moving away is the right move but is he the man we need in order to fix our midfield problems next season?

Gomes To Replace Can?

One player who would be leaving Anfield is Emre Can as the German seems set to join Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season. We would be looking to replace him but getting Gomes might not be the best plan out there. Barcelona would be looking to extract as much money as they can for the 24-year-old and they could be looking to get some of the Philippe Coutinho transfer money back from us.

Additionally, Gomes might not be the best player for our system and with Naby Keita also joining us at the start of next season, splashing so much cash on a player who could be on the bench for most of the season does not make sense.

We already have a lot of quality in midfield with Adam Lallana, James Milner and even Jordan Henderson fighting it out for the slots and with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting better under Jurgen Klopp, it might make more sense to push players such as Marko Grujic and find our solution from within.
