Loris Karius’ lacklustre showing between the sticks against Real Madrid in the Champions League final has made it apparent that Liverpool are in dire need of a new goalkeeper.

First-choice keeper Simon Mignolet was displaced after a slew of poor performances for a good majority of the recently concluded season and Karius stepped in. Despite doubts, he shone brightly for us and put in some decisive displays to save our skin numerous times.

However, at a time when it really mattered, Karius let us down in a terrible manner and as expected, he has been facing a lot of backlashes.

Nevertheless, whatever had to happen has happened and it makes no sense to pinpoint and dwell upon Karius’ mistakes. Yes, he failed to do much but now, our focus must be towards bringing in a new goalkeeper this summer. However, beIN Sport’s senior football anchor Richard Keys feels that we should have done something about this last year.

In a tweet after the game, Keys emphasised that Liverpool should have made a strong attempt to sign Jordan Pickford last summer.

Everton acquired him from Sunderland for £25m (could rise to £30m) and the Englishman is a force to reckon with as far as goalkeeping is concerned. Keys believes he could have been a good choice for Liverpool, given our lack of quality personnel in that department.

Well, there’s no point crying over spilt milk now. There is nothing we can do but learn from our mistakes and it goes without saying that Jurgen Klopp must sign a quality keeper this summer.
