Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed Liverpool are a top side and his side are trying to close in on the Reds.

City travel to Anfield for a mouth watering clash on Sunday and the Spaniard pointed out that he picked up the Premier League title, despite Liverpool beating his team thrice last season.

Guardiola was asked if the Reds had figured out how to beat the Cityzens, to which he replied (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Good – congratulations. They are right. So we won the Premier League.

“They are a top side even if we win, the way they play. Liverpool beat us but they beat a lot of teams, not just Manchester City.

“Liverpool are one of the two greatest teams in England and that’s why we tried to be close with them in terms of many, many things, and we are closer. They are a top side.”

Liverpool were City’s Achilles heel last season as we beat them thrice. The Reds beat them 4-3 at Anfield in the Premier League and won both clashes in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The match on Sunday will have a lot riding on the race for the Premier League title. City and Liverpool are tied on the same number of points after seven games.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lost the last game, against Napoli, and barely put up a fight in midweek. We have to be at our best on Sunday if we are to beat City and land a significant blow before the international break.
