Liverpool are one of five Premier League clubs interested in forming a European Super League by breaking away from the Premier League and the Champions League, according to Der Spiegel (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The report claims that Bayern Munich are leading the group about creating a new competition from 2021 which features Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and the Reds.

The other clubs interested in this competition include Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid with five guest teams invited to form a 16-team competition, as per the report.

The report further claims that Liverpool would be one of the 11 founding members of the competition and would not run the risk of getting relegated. The membership would run for 20 years and provide financial protection.

However, Bayern released a statement where they hit back at the rumours. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of the European Club Association (ECA), said (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“I absolutely and clearly reject this.

“The vote in favour of the reform agreed between UEFA and the ECA was unanimous.

“FC Bayern is also unaware of recent plans for a so-called Super League, also reported by ‘Der Spiegel’, nor has FC Bayern taken part in negotiations relating to such plans. FC Bayern is also unaware of why it is listed in a document quoted in this context by ‘Der Spiegel’.”

The German added that Bayern will remain part of the Bundesliga and take part in competitions organised by UEFA and the ECA.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in world football, but breaking away to form a super league doesn’t really make sense given that we are already playing in the Champions League and are on the up.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops in the coming months, and hopefully, we will stick to the Premier League and win it soon.
