Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has questioned Jurgen Klopp’s decision to mix things regarding the starting XI. Liverpool started with Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Joel Matip against Red Star Belgrade but slumped to a 2-0 defeat.

The loss puts our Champions League progress in doubt as we play PSG and Napoli in our final group games.

Jurgen Klopp did change things in the second half with Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez coming on, and this was something that Souness pinpointed.

The former captain was asked what went wrong with the team, and told Virgin Media One (h/t Express):

“I think not starting with Firmino or Joe Gomez.

“The fact they were on the bench and came on half time suggests they were fine so it wasn’t them carrying something.”

The former midfielder believed that there was a sense of complacency from the Reds since we beat Red Star 4-0 in the reverse fixture.

Souness added that starting with the strongest team should have been the tactic with players being substituted once the job was done.

The former Red added Liverpool didn’t start well and handed the momentum to the home side. Souness further claimed that we are not playing in the same manner as last season.

The Reds have their progression in their own hands as a win over PSG in Paris will see us into the next round. Our last game is at home against Napoli, and hopefully, we can secure our spot in the next round before we face the Italians.
