Liverpool were handed a major boost in their Premier League hopes without even playing Leicester City. Manchester City were trailing us by four points heading into the fixture against Newcastle United. Pep Guardiola’s men came into the game in incredible form but were undone at St. James’ Park.

Things didn’t start off well for Rafa Benitez’s side as Sergio Aguero scored within a minute of the first whistle. City then dominated the first half, and another Aguero goal was chalked off as the away side took the free-kick too early.

Newcastle hung on and went into half-time just a goal down, and things changed after the break. Salomon Rondon’s effort hit the turf and bounced above Ederson in the 66th minute before Fernandinho gave away a penalty.

Matt Ritchie made no mistake from the spot, and Newcastle picked up a vital win to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation. The win kept us four-points clear at the top, and we can extend that lead once we face Leicester City later.

Benitez has struggled to bring quality players in at Newcastle, but he did his old side a huge favour against the Cityzens.

The Spaniard is considered a legend for lifting the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, and his latest win brought out a lot of support from the Anfield faithful.
