Liverpool opinion: Jurgen Klopp’s statement about not spending much in the summer is the right one at the right time

Liverpool were one of the more busier teams in the previous summer window landing four star players.

Fabinho and Alisson has been excellent this season while we have seen glimpses of what Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita can do on the pitch.

The Reds spent a world record sum for a defender when they signed Virgil van Dijk in January last year, and the Dutchman has been the best player for the team this season.

Jurgen Klopp was recently speaking about our summer plans ahead of the clash against Fulham, and claimed we would not be spending much in the window (h/t Sky Sports):

“I don’t want to talk exactly what we will do, but I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever.”

The German claimed that he wants to develop the players in the current side, and doesn’t believe we would lose any names too.

The Reds were big spenders for the first time in a long while last summer but Klopp’s statement is the right one given our current scenario.

A boost for the players

The last thing any player would need is for the manager to come out and say he wants to strengthen certain areas of the team.

The current crop of players have taken us this far in the Premier League race and the Champions League, and Klopp backing them will give them that little extra in the final games of the season.

The German has been a fantastic man manager at Liverpool and we need no distractions regarding transfer speculation during the final two months of the season or so.

Further, we have some quality youngster in the team such as Rhian Brewster, and away on loan, such as Harry Wilson who could get some minutes next season.

Klopp believes the players will stay

Liverpool have done well to extend the deals of several top players this season with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all penning new deals.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson also signed new deals which keeps our young players at the club for longer.

The German added that in the past Liverpool lost one of their top players which affected the development of the team, but he has made us one of the best in the world.

It would be difficult seeing any of them leave given we are on the up, and a title this season would certainly entice them to stay at Liverpool for longer.

Liverpool will spend in the window

Klopp didn’t claim outright that the Reds would not spend in the window, he just suggested we would not spend big.

However, the German’s statement has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno are out of contract in the summer, and the Reds might need to replace them.

The German also provided his backing to Loris Karius throughout the summer claiming we would not move for another keeper and we signed Alisson.

Similarly, Fabinho was a surprise signing just a day or so after our Champions League final defeat.

The Reds are on the up and there should be some signings, such as cover for Andy Robertson or another attacker to give a rest to the likes of Salah and Mane.

However, it would be unlikely we splash the cash as we did in the previous summer.
