Latest Liverpool news: Jan Vertonghen a doubt for Champions League final against Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo reports that Jan Vertonghen is a doubt for the Champions League final against Liverpool after picking up a foot injury.

The 32-year-old played the entire game as Spurs overcame a 3-0 aggregate deficit against Ajax on Wednesday.

Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick to send Tottenham through on away goals, but Vertonghen was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and wearing a protective cast (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The report adds that the Belgian is a major doubt for the final game of the season against Everton but will have a three-week timeline to regain his fitness for the Champions League clash.

Another Tottenham star gearing up for the final

Vertonghen picked up the problem in the first half but continued playing on, and the report adds that Harry Kane is also targeting a return ahead of the Champions League final.

The England striker suffered ankle ligament damage against Manchester City but was seen running onto the pitch after the win over Ajax.

Kane told BT Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Hopefully (I’ll be fit), the rehab has gone well so far.”

The striker added that he had started running and did not want to cut any corners. However, he still had some way to go before being declared fit.

“We’ll see but so-far so-good so if it carries on like it should then hopefully but we’ve still got a few weeks.”

Not facing Kane or Vertonghen would be a huge boost for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp attempts to win his first trophy at the club.

The Reds should be favourites for the tie even if the pair play, and going by the way we have performed this season, no one can doubt our ability to win the Champions League for the sixth time.

Liverpool should not become complacent ahead of the game and hopefully, we go into Madrid having won the Premier League title on Sunday.
