Latest Liverpool transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt set to join Paris Saint-Germain

Liverpool have been linked with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt recently, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Dutch centre-back had a great season for Ajax and the Dutch national side. De Ligt played in the Champions League semi-final and the final of the Nations League but could not win either title.

The 19-year-old captained Ajax to the Eredivisie title and his stock is at an all-time high currently.

Liverpool seem to be out of the race for the Dutch centre-back with De Telegraaf (h/t Liverpool Echo) suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain will sign the 19-year-old.

PSG beat some big names for De Ligt

The report adds that PSG are set to defeat Barcelona to the signing of the 19-year-old centre-back.

De Ligt would have made an excellent signing for the Reds, however, we have a quality young defender in our ranks already.

Joe Gomez was fantastic alongside Virgil van Dijk last season before he suffered a lower leg fracture.

The England international is back to full-fitness but lost his place in the starting XI thanks to Joel Matip’s resurgence.

The former Schalke defender played his best football in the second half of the previous campaign and was a star in the Champions League final too.
