Latest Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah’s Egypt knocked out of AFCON by South Africa

The African Cup of Nations saw yet another unexpected result as Egypt were beaten 1-0 by South Africa.

The hosts were one of the favourites to land the title, however, Mohamed Salah’s side were knocked out in the round of 16.

This AFCON has seen some surprise performances, such as Madagascar qualifying for the round of 16, and Morocco losing to Benin on penalties.

In all honesty, South Africa were the better side during the clash and deserved to make it into the quarter-finals.

Salah was distraught at the result after the final whistle, and the South Africans will face Nigeria in the round of 16.

Cameroon were also one of the favourites for the title but were dumped out by Nigeria.

Fans believe Salah will get a decent rest now

Salah was one of the stars expected to carry Egypt to the title, and an early exit in the tournament isn’t great for the African nation.

However, this could work out for Salah as he needs to rest up after a long season last time around.

The Egyptian carried an injury while playing at the World Cup, and didn’t have a lot of rest before the start of our previous campaign.

Salah was present in most of our games last season and now should have a proper break before the Premier League campaign starts on 9 August.

The Egyptian has close to a month before preparing for another big season, and many Liverpool fans looked at the positive side of Salah’s exit from the AFCON.
