Jason McAteer wants N’Golo Kante at Liverpool

Former Liverpool star Jason McAteer believes N’Golo Kante is the missing piece in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Chelsea star joined the Blues from Leicester City and helped them lift the Premier League title.

Kante was one of the key figures in Leicester’s Premier League title run and also won the World Cup with France in 2018.

McAteer was speaking to Racing Post and lauded Fabinho for growing into the defensive midfielder’s role at Anfield (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“He took time to settle at Anfield but was taken out of the team and given time on the training ground and has now slotted back in seamlessly.”

Fabinho joined from Monaco but didn’t start for the Reds straightaway. Klopp slowly bedded him into the team, and the Brazilian has become a key player for us.

McAteer lauded the Brazilian’s ability to read the danger and the fact that Fabinho doesn’t try fancy things on the pitch.

However, McAteer added that Kante would be an excellent addition to the side:

“He and N’Golo Kante at Chelsea are the two best players in the Premier League playing that role – Kante is definitely one of the final pieces in Jurgen Klopp’s jigsaw.”

Liverpool’s midfield options

The Reds are blessed with several midfield options for the first-team currently, however, they don’t have quality cover for Fabinho.

Adam Lallana has been tried in the deeper role but he cannot seem to perform at the same level as the Brazilian.

Fabinho was rested in the win over Aston Villa as he was in danger of missing the Manchester City clash due to a suspension.
