Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool still in the race for Manchester City and Real Madrid target Jude Bellingham

Fabrizio Romano has offered some respite to Liverpool fans by claiming that the Reds are not giving up on their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

This comes after a report from the Athletic’s (Subscription Required) David Ornstein, who claimed that Liverpool were unlikely to sign the Englishman given Manchester City and Real Madrid’s spending power.

Romano exclusively told CaughtOffside:

“Jude Bellingham has not made a final decision yet. The situation remains open; it was not done with Liverpool in December and January despite many rumours, and it’s not off now. Real Madrid are pushing a lot as they really want Jude, same for Manchester City. “Of course, Liverpool’s uncertainty in their ownership situation is not helping but the club is still there in the race.”

All of this is information a Liverpool fan would have probably not been surprised by, in all honesty. We have been linked with Bellingham for a while and given how Fenway Sports Group (FSG) operate in the transfer market, affording the Dortmund star won’t be easy.

What to make of it?

He could cost more than 100million Euros and that’s not money that even the biggest clubs in the world could consider chump change. That being said, this summer could mark two years without the club replacing Giorginio Wijnaldum since his free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

One would think they have been saving money since then to sign a proper world-class midfielder. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain seem to be out of manager Jurgen Klopp’s plans while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho Tavares are just not consistent recently.

Bellingham, 19, is destined for greatness. There are clubs in the transfer market that have money to spend and if Liverpool don’t put a lucrative offer on the table, then Bellingham’s love for Steven Gerrard and Liverpool may not matter for much.

There is a gaping hole in our midfield that Bellingham will know he can fill. He won’t have to worry about competition or regular playing time here. It just remains to be seen if FSG are the type of owners that can spend such money to take this club forward.
