Liverpool’s German manager Jürgen Klopp has a huge task ahead of him and the reason being; the arrival of the top managers like Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte. The Premier League will be getting tougher than ever before and therefore, the fans will be demanding something extraordinary from the players.
Klopp did a fantastic job last campaign, but it was sad to see the side losing to Manchester City in the Capital One cup and then to Sevilla in the Europa League final. The road to the finals was surely not an easy task, but the Kopites did the impossible. They knocked out their arch rivals Manchester United with an utter humiliation then did the unimaginable against Borussia Dortmund, then the ignominy of Villarreal.
Now, with the new season approaching, Jürgen Klopp will be looking forward to reshape the entire squad from the scratch. The German has not wasted a single minute and has already signed 3 players. Goalkeeper Loris Karius has been bought to replace the error-prone Simon Mignolet. Joel Matip has been bought to complete the defensive line and the Marko Grujic to stabilize the midfield.
Many players have been linked with Liverpool in recent weeks, but Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell has been there on the list for a long time now. The 19-year-old English defender has been on the radar of many English clubs, but it was reported that Liverpool were the most favorite side to sign him.
The name of this young Englishman popped out from nowhere. Chilwell is a product of Leicester City’s academy and is also the Academy Player of the Year for the club. Chilwell hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League but has made 2 appearances for the Foxes in the FA Cup. The 19-year-old left back also spent a short loan spell with the Championship’s side Huddersfield Town during November 2015 to January 2016.
Well, Liverpool do need a solid left back to complete the backline, but signing Chilwell might not be the best idea. The Englishman has no experience in the Premier League, and spending £10m on such player might become a failure. I do agree that Klopp has a great reputation when dealing with the young guns, but we cannot overlook the fact that Liverpool already have Joe Gomez for that.
Liverpool will not be featuring in the Champions League and signing a 3rd left back will only endanger the future of the existing players. Many pundits believe that Moreno should be given another opportunity because let’s face it, he is just 23 and there is a lot of room for improvement. Besides Moreno, Gomez was impressive during the starting stages of the last campaign, but it was sad to see him getting injured and miss most of the season.
If Liverpool are willing to spend £10m, then they must look for a concrete option rather than an inexperienced player. Both Moreno and Gomez have their entire career ahead of them, and signing Chilwell might result in a departure of one of them.
