Is This How Liverpool’s Defensive Line Up Will Look Next Season, With Two New Signings?

Talks of renewing Jurgen Klopp’s contract have begun and the board has taken the right step to secure the club’s biggest asset for the foreseeable future. Eight months was all it took to offer a new contract to the manager who undoubtedly is the best thing that has happened to the reds in a long time. Clearing out the dead log was one of the important issues that Klopp had to tackle and the German is doing just that this summer transfer window. Martin Skrtel, Christian Benteke and now Jordan Ibe will provide enough funds to make two more signings as per the manager’s requirements.

Goals win you games, defence wins you titles; this is absolutely true for Liverpool as the reds have not been able to find a solid back four to provide a solid base for the team. Sometimes full backs become the issue while sometimes, centre backs fail to live upto the expectations. The biggest issue was the goalkeeper as Simon Mignolet has been guilty of making errors at crucial moments in a match. He cost the reds 10+ points last season and it was necessary to find an upgrade for him. Let’s take a look at how Liverpool’s back five will lineup come the start of the new campaign on the 14th of August:

Goalkeeper: Loris Karius

The new signing has started training with the squad and will look to take the mantle from Mignolet next season. He has all the abilities to succeed at this level and the reds have a real gem in their hands as Karius is tipped by many to become Germany’s no.1 in the future. Karius has all the abilities that the Belgian lacks and at just £4.5m, Liverpool have had a steal with securing his services.

Right back: Nathaniel Clyne

He can be said as Liverpool’s Mr. Consistent as Clyne had a stellar 15-16 season and played the most number of games last term. Clyne had a brilliant game against Slovakia in the Euros and should have played instead of Kyle Walker in the round of 16 game against Iceland. Liverpool don’t need to look anywhere now as the right back spot is fixed for the next 4-5 years.

Centre back: Dejan Lovren

The Croatian saved his Liverpool career under Jurgen Klopp and has improved leaps and bounds under the German. His performances in the latter stages of the season was proof why the club paid a whopping £20 million to secure his services. Lovren does not look like a liability anymore and will look to have a stellar season.

Centre back: Joel Matip

Matip can prove to be a shrewd signing and will be in the starting lineup as Mamadou Sakho is still yet to know his fate in the doping case and even if he is cleared of a ban, Sakho has not played a professional match since two months and will take time to reach the level required to play in the league games. Matip was one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and the goal scoring defender will look to assert his authority in the Premier League.

Left back: Alberto Moreno

The left back position is the discussion point among all the supporters as the opinion seems to be divided over the Spaniard. Moreno has shown glimpses of his talent but his defensive frailties have cost Liverpool games and most importantly, the Europa League final. A left back is going to be targeted but Jonas Hector seems to be a bit costly and the reds are not looking to spend £20million on a defender. Ben Chilwell Is another target but he is still a youngster who will take time to settle into life in the Premier League. So, as it stands, Alberto Moreno will be the Fullback for the next campaign.
