This summer Liverpool have been associated with a number of left-backs. Jonas Hector, Ben Chilwell have been on the list ever since the transfer window opened. Right now, Liverpool have Alberto Moreno as the first choice left back. Moreno had an average season and he was heavily criticized for his defensive work. Moreno was excellent going forward, but lacked the stability and composure while defending. And Liverpool were expected to sign a left back before they signed any other player. Aston Villa’s French left back Jordan Amavi is supposedly in Jurgen Klopp’s radar. Reports linking the gifted left back with Liverpool have resurfaced. Here is a brief background of the player.
Born in Toulon, Amavi began his senior career for Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice. His performances for Nice gave a glimpse of his potential and the talent that he possesses. His impressive displays at the left back position drew attention from Europe’s top clubs. Last season though, Amavi made a move to the English club Aston Villa. The season began quite well for the Frenchman but a horrendous knee injury while away on international duty, obviously, ended the season for him. Amavi is returning to match-fitness and a few clubs have shown interest in him.
Jordan Amavi’s best season so far came in the French league while playing for Nice. His senior career for Nice’s first team began in the 2013/14 season. Owing to inconsistency, he managed only 9 starts in 19 appearances that season, but he was offered a new contract at the end of the season. During the 2014/15 season, Amavi began as the club’s first choice left back and he did not disappoint.
Amavi is a good example of the modern full back. He has great threat while going forward and is also competent defensively. Amavi has great dribbling skills and his pace helps him make darting runs down the flanks. In the 2014/15 season, he averaged 1.9 dribbles per game which shows how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet. He is a hard-working player and his work rate is tremendous for his age. Defensively, he is very strong and his interceptions, tackles and clearances were among the best in Ligue 1 that season. At 147, he had made the most number of interceptions that season by any player in the French league.
It gives a great idea of the positional sense that he possesses. In the 10 appearances he made for Aston Villa last season, he was again at the top of the charts in the number of interceptions. Amavi is not tall but his aerial ability is surprisingly good. In the 2014/15 season, he won 53% of the aerial duels. It makes him a vital player while defending as well as attacking set-pieces. Also, he has a great right foot and takes accurate shots from distance.
Amavi has a lot of potential and is supremely talented. All he needs is proper game time and good guidance. Amavi’s attacking threat is a highlight considering his defensive qualities. Under Klopp, Amavi can develop into France’s best left back. The knee injury last season hindered his progress but he is nearing match fitness and considering his talent, he surely is capable of playing for a top club in the Premier League and Liverpool is a good option for the Frenchman.
