Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has spoken about his disappointment regarding the Reds letting go of their midfielder Joe Allen.
According to Thompson, the reds should not have sold Allen after the Welsh player’s excellent displays during the Europen Championship 2016. With the extraordinary displays in the Euros that saw Wales reach the semi-finals, the player should have been given a chance to stay at the Anfield.
“I was really disappointed to see him [Allen] leave Liverpool,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I thought this was made for him, I thought this was his time.
“He had a terrific Euros and I thought that would persuade Jurgen Klopp to say ‘you’re going to stay at this football club’.”
Allen made 132 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions during his four seasons at the Anfield in addition to seven goals to his credit, for the Merseysiders.
Allen joined Stoke City this summer on a five-year contract at a fee of £13m, from Liverpool.
Allen is known for his tactical ability, discipline and hard-work and also for aiding his team creatively and offensively. The player was highly regarded by the former Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers however he failed to impress the German manager Jurgen Klopp.
