With Liverpool constantly on the search for more talent that can fit into Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy, they seem to be ready to make a move for Sassuolo’s Gregoire Defrel. The 25-year-old French forward has been part of the Serie A side after making a €7m move from Cesena in 2015 and has started this season on fire.
Defrel already has five goals to his name from six games and has been linked with a whole host of clubs in Europe. Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye for the hotshot according to Gazzamercato. The French forward still has a number of years left on his contract but if he continues scoring at this rate, he will be moving away from the club sooner rather than later.
Liverpool aren’t the only club linked with a move for Defrel as Crystal Palace and Swansea City are also in the chase for his signature.
While there is a bright future for Defrel, his link to Liverpool does seem to be a little out of place.
A lot of quality in the Liverpool front-line
Liverpool have been excellent in attack this season and have scored 24 goals in their 8 games so far. The front attack has been led magnificently well by Sadio Mane and the likes of Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho have also started the season extremely well.
Goals are not an issue for the Reds and neither is the striking department. The Merseyside club already have Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in the side, while Danny Ings is still working on making a proper return to the side this season after recovering from a long-term injury.
The funny stat from the goals is that neither Origi nor Sturridge have managed to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season. That would be a cause of concern for Klopp as he would want everyone in the attack to contribute with goals.
Roberto Firmino was played as the striker or a false nine by Klopp in the 5-1 demolition of Hull City and the Brazilian has taken over the role of Liverpool’s main attacker from Daniel Sturridge.
The English striker is not an automatic first choice at the club and it would not be a surprise to see him leave in the winter transfer window. Liverpool do not have extra cup games in Europe and with their fluid system working wonders, they do not need a genuine striker to start games either.
Additionally, Sturridge’s injury record is a concern for many at the club and Klopp could be looking for replacements that can do a lot more than just score for the team. The Liverpool side is known for their hard pressing style and Sturridge doesn’t seem to fit in all that well.
Defrel might not be the answer to the Sturridge conundrum but he is known for a defensive playing style. The Frenchman loves to put in a tackle as well and Klopp would want a player in a similar vein for the Reds in the near future.
