With Liverpool facing Manchester United after the end of the international break, Eric Cantona has ruffled some feathers. The former United player recently brought up his impressive record against Liverpool and stated that he always won against the Reds.

Cantona won the Premier League four times with the Manchester club and playing against Liverpool was always going to be one of the highlights of his time in England. The former Leeds United man was quoted by the News Straits Times as saying:

“You should ask Liverpool fans whether I ever had a poor game against their team. United always won.

“The goal in the FA Cup final against Liverpool is my greatest ever. I volleyed home the winning goal.”

The Frenchman did lead United to their first league title in 26 years in 1992-93. Cantona is seen as a legend for the Red Devils, though he did have a lot of off-field issues. Everyone remembers the kung-fu kick that got him banned for eight months.

Cantona played eight times against the fierce rivals and won five. The Red Devils lost just once, a 2-0 defeat in December 1995. The Frenchman did win a lot more than lose and even picked up a couple of FA Cup titles with Manchester United.

A battle for the ages

With Manchester City losing to Tottenham at the weekend, there is an added incentive to do well for both Liverpool and United. The Reds have been incredible this season and are just a couple of points behind City in the league table.

While Manchester United have to play European football, Liverpool do not have that distraction. The Reds face United on October 18 and will be looking to continue their fine run of form.

Manchester United did defeat Liverpool in the league last season, but the Reds picked up a crucial win at home in the Europa League round of 16. The second leg saw a 1-1 draw, which secured their place in the next round.

While United managed to get only a point against Stoke at the weekend, their performance was great. The Red Devils will consider themselves to be unlucky as to not have picked up three points. The Manchester club dominated the Potters and had a number of chances to score.

Liverpool have looked brilliant in attack but their defence is still a concern. The Reds are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League and Loris Karius did not have a great game at Swansea.

The Reds needed a late penalty to win the game at Wales and the United test will be tough for Jurgen Klopp. Once the international break is over, all eyes will be on Monday where the two big rivals of English football go against each other and it will be a battle worth watching.
