Sky Sports has recently used a football algorithm to list out four players that Liverpool could target in the January transfer window. The organisation used Football Whispers as their source and some of the choices in the list don’t really make sense.
The four players listed are Niklas Sule of Hoffenheim, Michael Keane of Burnley, Leandro Pavoletti of Genoa and Geoffrey Kondogbia of Inter Milan. The first two from the list are centre-backs and while Pavoletti is a striker and Kondogbia is a defensive midfielder.
A crazy list to being with
There just are a few issues with this list that Sky Sports have presented. As stated earlier in our pieces, Kondogbia and Pavoletti moving to Liverpool do not make sense. They aren’t required in the side and would only add to a bulky midfield and attack.
Those two regions of the team are doing really well, especially with Liverpool scoring goals and creating chances throughout the season. The rumours regarding Sule and Keane, though, make a lot more sense.
Defensive reinforcements for the Reds?
Had rumours of centre-backs joining Liverpool been shared at the start of the season, no one would have believed them. But there was a major situation rising and that was of Mamadou Sakho. The French defender has not played for the Reds since last season and it does not look likely that he will break into the team.
The French defender is surely out of the plans of Klopp and the German manager would be looking to add more quality in the defence. Sule does stand out as the better option as the 21-year-old has already made an appearance for the German national team.
The Hoffenheim star certainly would be a viable option and would come on the cheap as well. The fact that Liverpool already conducted business with the German club regarding Roberto Firmino does give them an upper hand in these dealings.
Keane would also be a decent option given that he has been part of the English system for a while but even if Liverpool do think about signing any of the players; it certainly won’t be in the January window. We saw last season that even when there were issues regarding injuries, Klopp did not sign any player in the winter window.
The German also knows full well that the second window of the season ends up with inflated prices and cup tied players, though the secondary issue won’t be a problem for the Reds. Unless Liverpool offloads Mamadou Sakho in the winter window, we would not be seeing any fresh faces this season.
