One of Liverpool’s transfer targets from the summer, Jonas Hector, is now being linked with a move elsewhere. The Cologne defender was part of the German squad at Euro 2016 and has started this season pretty well for the Bundesliga side.
According to reports from the German Express, Inter Milan are interested in bringing the 26-year-old to the San Siro. There is competition from England as well, as the Mirror claims that Tottenham wants to sign the talented €30million left-back.
Liverpool were linked with a move for Hector but nothing came to fruition during the summer. Even during this season, the Reds do not have proper cover for Alberto Moreno, their left-back. It is James Milner who has been doing a great job in that position but he has not been tested vehemently yet.
Liverpool need a proper left-back
Even with Milner’s great performances, Liverpool need a proper left-back for the job. While the Reds are not playing a lot of games this season, that is surely going to change with the possibility of more European fixtures next year.
The Reds might even qualify for the Champions League and they would need quality cover for every position. Hector is that kind of player who can also play further up as a winger, should a need arise.
The 26-year-old has also played a few games in midfield and that is another reason why Klopp would want to sign him up. The German might not be the best left-back in the world but no one will doubt the Liverpool manager’s signings, based on what we have seen this season.
Hector a Cologne player through and through
Hector has spent more or less his entire professional career at the Bundesliga club. The 26-year-old hasn’t won any major silverware with the club but his consistent performances have helped him become a regular in Joachim Low’s side.
The German has made 139 appearances for the senior Cologne side and could now be looking for a move away from the club for a bigger challenge. Moving to Liverpool would give him a slot in the starting XI easily.
If he was to move away to any other club, Hector might have to fight for a place but Liverpool do not have a world-class left-back. The German would be a shrewd signing by Klopp as Hector would come on the cheap.
But Klopp would probably not want to sign someone in the winter window and keep his doings in the summer transfer window only. Hector would be a great addition to any side and he would certainly make Liverpool better.
