At the start of the season, it was expected that Liverpool were going to sell Lucas Leiva this season. The Reds had brought in Georginio Wijnaldum this season and even the likes of Marko Grujic was expected to get a chance in the first team.

Even when the first few games began, it became clear that Lucas was not going to play in midfield as often as he would have liked. In fact, the Brazilian even played a game in defence as a centre-back. There were no guarantees of playing games for the Reds but the former Gremio man decided to stick with Liverpool over the summer.

He was even linked with a move to Turkey with Galatasaray but he stated to ESPN that he was comfortable at Liverpool.

“There really were a few exit opportunities, they ended up not happening, Liverpool didn’t feel comfortable to seal a deal.

“For the time I’ve been here, I respected the club and stayed for another year, for this season, starting my tenth season for the club, which is a very cool mark.”

Have confidence in Klopp

Even though the Brazilian has not played as many games as he would have liked, the midfielder was happy to be working under Jürgen Klopp. He even claimed that playing under the German is unlike any other manager ever.

“A season with Klopp is much different than any other season I had with other managers.

“My relationship with Klopp is very good, I have full confidence from him. Last year there were eight or nine months to know a little more about the way he wants the team to work.”

Lucas was also pretty happy with the way the season has started and he expects that the Reds will break the trophy drought this season under Klopp.

“And this year, with a full pre-season with him and new signings, we started the Premier League very well. So we expect to be able to have a different year than last year in relation to titles, last year we got to two finals and we lost the two, and this year we expect it to be different.”

The end of the road for Lucas

Although the midfielder has been a great servant for the club, it probably is the end of his career at the club. Lucas has always given his all whenever he puts on the jersey but the Reds do have a lot of quality in this part of the team.

With Emre Can and Marko Grujic set to man the defensive things of midfield in the future, Lucas might be the player that provides a wealth of experience to the youngsters.
