Liverpool could be in a tug of war for the signing of Iranian star Sardar Azmoun. There have been reports that the Merseyside club is looking to sign the Rostov attacker who has impressed in the Champions League this season.

The team that could be looking to sign the player from under the nose of Liverpool is Everton, according to Tutto Mercato Web. The Merseyside rival has had a decent time under new manager Ronald Koeman and the former Southampton manager has eyed Azmoun for his side.

Everton do not really have a lot of options for the striking department and recently Koeman had also stated that star striker Romelu Lukaku should move away from the club if he is to develop as a footballer.

The Belgian star was linked with a big money move away from Everton in the summer. But Lukaku decided to stay put, however, it does seem his future at the Toffees is in doubt and he would surely leave the club sooner rather than later.

Big battle on for Azmoun

The 21-year-old attacker has scored just thrice all season but all of his goals have come in the UEFA Champions League. The Iranian has a great scoring record for the national side and he has notched up 16 goals in just 22 games, which is a terrific number to boast about.

Azmoun still has not played at the highest level as the Russian league isn’t as robust as the Premier League is. The Iranian could still play in some of the other leagues in Europe but the Premier League does look like a leap too high.

The Iranian has often stated that he does want to move to England and Everton’s majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, could be the reason why Azmoun could move to the Toffees and not the Reds.

Liverpool do need someone for their attack in the winter window but Azmoun is not the kind of player that could replace Sadio Mane in the side. Mane would be away on African Cup of Nations duty with Senegal and the German manager would want a similar player at the Premier League leaders.

Azmoun to Everton too doesn’t really make a lot of sense but he could be the one signing that Moshiri makes with Koeman to prove the other Merseyside club can deal with the big boys. It will be interesting to see just where Azmoun lands but Everton do have the upper hand at the moment.
