Liverpool have been linked with a number of players for the upcoming winter window and one of those is Hector Herrera. The Mexican star has been plying his trade at Porto this season but he hasn’t had the best of times in the club this season.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from Porto with clubs such as Juventus and Napoli in the race along with the Merseyside club but the Mexican is more than happy at the Portuguese side.
Speaking to Televisa Deportes, Herrera opened up about his current situation as many clubs are after his signature.
“I know nothing about this. I’m at FC Porto and my thoughts are there
“I’ll stay there while the president wants me.”
Herrera could be sold by Porto soon
While the 26-year-old does want to stay at the club, he could be sold by the Portuguese club at the end of the season according to A Bola. The outlet believes Liverpool are leading the race to sign the midfielder and even though the player has a release clause of €40m, the Reds could sign him for half the amount.
Liverpool have not had a player of the Xabi Alonso calibre since the Spaniard left for Real Madrid and Herrera could do that job. The Mexican is also known for his tackling, so he can play the deepest role in Jurgen Klopp’s side rather easily.
The major problem with the midfielder is his lack of form. Herrera has struggled to perform at the highest level this season and that could deter Liverpool from signing him. This is one reason why the Mexican could be offloaded by Porto as well and the club are willing to let him go on the cheap.
The Reds do have a lot of quality when it comes to the midfield with Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana all playing amazingly well this season. They even have Kevin Stewart waiting to break into the starting XI and Herrera could find it tough to make it to the lineup regularly.
Jurgen Klopp does have a decent record with most of his signings doing pretty well. Even Georginio Wijnaldum is looking brilliant under the German so a final decision on whether Herrera would star or not but from the current situation with the outstanding midfielder at the club, it doesn’t really look likely that the reds will sign him anytime soon.
