Former Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has thrown his name in the ring for a future job as the manager for the Merseyside club. The 38-year-old is currently the U23 coach for Watford and was recently in Australia to pick up Professional Footballers Australia’s highest honour – the Alex Tobin Medal for outstanding contribution to the sport.
The 2005 Champions League winner with the Reds, Kewell was considered as one of the best players to have come out from Australia but he had an injury plagued career, for both club and country.
Speaking to ESPN, the former Leeds United star shared his ultimate dream, which is to coach Liverpool sometime in the future.
“My ultimate goal is Liverpool.”
But Kewell knows that the job will not be thrown to him that easily and he was willing to take a risk by going to a big club to see just how it goes.
“When you’re starting out do you start out working your way through the reserve team, go out on loan and start at a lower level?
“Or do you just get thrown into the deep end and play in the premiership?
“You don’t know unless you get thrown in there. I’m a big believer in sink or swim.
“I’m a big dreamer. You might as well go to the top. You want to dream big, you dream big.”
Not interested in taking up an A-League role
The A-League is set to expand with a couple of new teams in the 2018-19 season but Kewell did state that he was not willing to take up any role with the new sides.
“I think [expansion] is fantastic. As long as you’ve got players,” he said.
“At the moment you’ve got a good league happening. It’s interesting now. I watch it every weekend. That’s what you want.
“You don’t want to create an extra two teams and they become weak links because they’re just filling numbers.
“As far as me, I don’t know.
“I just worry about my coaching. I’ll just keep working and working until I get my opportunity.”
The Australian coming back to Liverpool would be a great move, especially if he completes all his coaching badges and gets all his UEFA licenses. The former Liverpool star might not get the top job anytime soon with Jurgen Klopp doing rather well but he could be an option in the future as the Reds look to bring in more people associated with the club for bigger roles.
It might even happen that 10 years down the line, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Kewell are all linked with roles in the management at the club and that would certainly give a great feeling to most Liverpool fans across the world.
