Liverpool blew the chance to close the gap on Chelsea after a 2-2 draw against Sunderland. The Merseyside club had just come off a great win against Manchester City but old failings returned as they gave away two penalties in a game they should have won.
The Reds did take the lead through Daniel Sturridge after he flicked home a shot from Dejan Lovren. The Merseyside club then gave away a penalty and Jermain Defoe stepped up to slot it in to make it 1-1.

Jurgen Klopp’s side then hammered on and got a late lead thanks to Sadio Mane but the hero turned to villain as he handled the ball in the box and Defoe grabbed an unlikely equalizer in the 84th minute to deny the Reds an important win.
With Chelsea playing later, the Blues could extend their lead to eight points after the end of this round of fixtures. With Twitter going berserk, we share the best reactions from the game.

Great to see Sturridge scoring – With Mané now gone to AFCON, hopefully this "minor" injury doesn keep him out for too long #LFC pic.twitter.com/moAr76Q1As

Liverpool's points total is excellent, always remember that. Chelsea's run is almost unparalleled, we've done very well to keep in touch.

Only Liverpool can beat Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea & Everton.
Then drop points to Burnley, Bournemouth, West Ham & Sunderland. pic.twitter.com/1z3i2g5Wax

And breathe… Dropping points is frustrating, but Liverpool have lead in 17 of their 20 games this season. It'll happen.

Think today shows why we need to buy in January. We're at least one or two bodies short in several positions. Injuries don't help either.
