Jurgen Klopp could be looking to reunite with one of the players from the Bundesliga. The former Borussia Dortmund manager certainly had a great rapport with most of the stars at the German club and one such star, Neven Subotic could be close to leaving the Bundesliga side.
The 28-year-old Serbian was linked with a move to Anfield in the summer window but that was not possible due to an injury. The Reds are linked once again with a move for a defender in the transfer window and this time it could be Subotic making the trip from German to England.
Subotic was speaking to Starsport and stated that he was thankful for the time under the German manager.
“Klopp has been my mentor for nine years, he supported me, encouraged me, had trust in me.
“With him and Dortmund I had the most amazing time. For that I am forever thankful.
“He was and is an important person in my life and I owe him a lot.”
Subotic has been frozen out of the first-team squad by Thomas Tuchel and it was expected that he would leave in the summer but no deal was finalised. The agent of the defender, Frieder Gamm, also stated that anything is possible and the Serbian could be playing in England soon.
The agent also shed light as to why an earlier deal was not done for his player.
“There were several options from all over Europe last summer but the rib operation had priority at that time.
“There was serious interest from several clubs but due to the operation a transfer did not take place.”
A big battle on the cards for Subotic
It isn’t just Liverpool who want to sign the former Mainz defender as Everton, Middlesbrough and Arsenal are interested, according to the Daily Star but Liverpool could be the one holding a few aces up their sleeve.
One such ace is Klopp having a great relationship with the player and Liverpool and Dortmund don’t really have poor relationships between them. The other important ace could be Mamadou Sakho.
The Frenchman still is unsure about his future away from Anfield and maybe a move to Germany could work out for him. The 26-year-old certainly would be an attractive proposition for Thomas Tuchel’s side and with Klopp needing defensive stability and quality at the back; it would not be a surprise seeing Subotic play under his ex-manager soon.
