‘I had to go to Google to find out who their players were’ – Andy Carroll Speaks About His £35million Liverpool Move

One of Liverpool’s most expensive players ever, Andy Carroll, revealed to the Daily Mail that he had to Google the players at the Merseyside club before making his move to Anfield. The former Newcastle man was sold on the final day of the 2011 winter transfer window for a fee of £35million but the Englishman failed to make a big enough impact.

Luis Suarez also arrived at the club at the same time and the Uruguayan became a legend in his short stay but Carroll struggled to fit into the team and also had a number of injuries to deal with. The English striker was then sold to West Ham, where he is still picking up his form but his injury record has caught up with him in London as well.

Carroll was speaking to Jamie Redknapp and said:

“Jamie, when I was leaving Newcastle for Liverpool, I was in the helicopter on the way down and I had to go to Google to find out who their players were, looking on the phone.

“I was signing and I didn’t know who my team-mates would be! I knew Stevie and some of the others but not all of them. And I loved it at Newcastle. I wasn’t ready to leave. It came as a shock.

“I’d had a season ticket, it was my club and it was a shock to move. I was 22. I could never get a grip at Liverpool.”

Therein was the problem for Carroll, many had stated that the striker was too young for such a big money move and that price-tag certainly had a big impact on his career at the club. The Englishman didn’t even want to leave Newcastle and that did affect his transition from playing for the Magpies to the Reds.

The change in managers also constantly hurt Carroll and it was not a surprise that he was sold to West Ham after an initial loan spell at the London club. Carroll only scored 11 goals in 58 appearances for the side during his time at Anfield and he didn’t fit into the scheme of things under Brendan Rodgers.

The Englishman is one of the best headers of the ball and seems to be finding his feet at the Hammers. He still hopes of making it back to the national side and if he continues scoring goals like the one he did against Crystal Palace, he should at least have a few more years at the top flight.
