Real Madrid youngster Mariano Diaz was reportedly hot property during the winter window and AS claims that close to 10 clubs wanted to sign the 23-year-old Dominican Republic striker. What is a little surprising is that the report claims that it was the player that turned down the clubs and didn’t budge from his position at the Santiago Bernabeu.

AS (Via Ibtimes) also claims that the likes of Spanish clubs Deportivo Alaves and Real Betis were looking to sign the forward and Liverpool too were in the running to bring him over to England.

Diaz has been in great form recently and was even called up to the senior squad this season by Zinedine Zidane. Diaz had scored 32 goals in just 43 games for the B side of the La Liga giants.

The youngster hasn’t played a lot of minutes this season but he certainly has taken his chances well and has scored five times in just nine appearances for the side. His chances have been limited a lot more since the likes of Alvaro Morata and Karim Benzema are preferred in attack for the Spanish giants.

AS also reported that Real Madrid wanted to let the player out on loan and it was the striker that decided against moving away from the club, which is surprising given that he would not be preferred to either Benzema or Morata at the moment.

Liverpool have had a poor time of trying to get strikers or players into the club in the winter window and this could be another failed attempt at bringing a Madrid player into the English team. They had even tried to sign former Real Madrid striker Jese Rodriguez on loan but even he didn’t come to the side.

The lack of transfer activity has been a problem that has seen them struggle for results in 2017. With just one win in the entire month and also saw them getting knocked out of two cup competitions. The Reds have also lost ground on leaders Chelsea and now lie 10 points behind the Blues.

The lack of goals in just this one month will cost the Reds a lot, they might not have won the title this season but they certainly could have gotten a second placed finish. A draw against Chelsea stopped the rot of three losses in a row at Anfield but having a proper striker when Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho were away could have made January one to remember.
