Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt is one of the major transfer targets for Jurgen Klopp in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Reds did try to sign the German attacker but failed to do so in the past couple of windows but Klopp could be going for a third attempt next season.
The 20-year-old is one of the brightest players coming in from the Bundesliga and the Liverpool manager might have to wait till 2018 to actually get him on the cheap. There are reports suggesting that Brandt has a clause in his contract which states that he can leave the side for £10.7m in 2018, as per TeamTalk.
As the year comes closer, Leverkusen might want to make the most of Brandt and decide to sell him in the summer for a larger fee but most clubs would know about this reported clause and could wait it out as the player spends another season or two at Bayer.
The Bundesliga club seems to be working behind the scenes to bring in quality into their side and recently signed rising star Leon Bailey from Genk. Bailey also plays in the same position as Brandt and has had a decent start to his career in the Bundesliga.
This could be a ploy from Leverkusen to get the most from the sale of Brandt in the summer and it would not be the first time they would have sold a promising player with Emre Can being an example.
Can did move to Liverpool from Leverkusen, even though Bayern Munich were interested in him and with Klopp in charge of the Premier League side, a number of German players could find Liverpool an option to join in the upcoming season.
Brandt has scored three goals for Leverkusen this season and has also provided six assists. The German can play across the front line and is adept at playing on the wings, a position that Klopp has been looking to add quality to this season.
The Reds have struggled when their wide men, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane have gone missing, injured or away on international duty, and that has led them to slip away from the top four this season.
The Merseyside, at one stage, were favourites for the title but that seems to be a distant chance now. If Liverpool do get their act back together, they could play in the Champions League next season and that would be an attractive proposition to Brandt and a number of other players.
