ben-breretonLiverpool might not have signed players in the winter transfer window but that was not for a lack of trying. Jurgen Klopp was exasperated at the fact that he could not bring in the players that he wanted and that seems to include Nottingham Forest starlet Ben Brereton.

The 17-year-old striker was a player that the Reds bid for in the January window but they were scoffed by the Championship side thanks to their offer of £2.5 million. As per the reports from Daily Mirror, the Merseyside club are battling Manchester United for the signature of the English striker and it seems it was a good decision by Forest to keep hold of Brereton.

Brereton did score a last minute winner against Aston Villa recently and that will surely bump his price up as Forest look to sell off their star in the summer. The Englishman wouldn’t directly go into the starting XI of any side but the academy of the side.

Manchester United and Liverpool both have a great history with regards to players making it out of their academy but it does seem that Liverpool have a better record of it recently, especially under their manager Klopp.

The German is known to give youngsters a chance of doing well in the side and we have seen the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and Ben Woodburn break into the first team and have been provided game time in some of the biggest matches.

Alexander-Arnold certainly played in one of the biggest games in the world as he faced Manchester United and the youngster did pretty well to ensure that Klopp’s trust in the youngster was a good idea.

Looking at Brereton, he does seem to be developing well and it wouldn’t be a complete surprise that the youngster would be sent back on loan at Forest as soon as he is signed by another club. Liverpool would have to step up their game if they are looking to sign the striker up but the main issue for the Merseyside club has been a lack of quality first team squad members.

The lack of quality has hurt the Reds as they have slipped down the Premier League standings but the quality of their young players certainly leads to a bright future, should they continue developing in the right manner.

Brereton certainly would be facing a lot of competition at Liverpool, even if it is in the reserves or the U19 side. The youngster does have a bright future ahead of him but he needs to continue his development at the right side and Liverpool would be the perfect side for him.
