Liverpool Injury Updates
Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed an update on the fitness of Dejan Lovren and Marko Grujic as the Merseyside club continue their training in La Manga.
With Premier League action taking a back seat this weekend and thanks to Klopp’s side being eliminated in the FA Cup last round by Wolverhampton Wanderers, the team have ample of time to train and have taken the quite popular path at this point in the year, packing bags to somewhere warmer.
At present, the top four race is certainly a tense and tight affair, as the contenders are sniffing on each other’s shoulder while Liverpool’s poor start to the year have cost them to not only drop out of the title race but now sit in the 5th position.
Yet Klopp’s side finally bounced back in their last outing, comfortably edging out Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield. They kept the second-best defence in the league on the back foot from start and Sadio Mane reminded everyone what his team was missing by bagging a brace.
It would be interesting to see how much Liverpool’s sojourn will play an impact on their performance and mentality in the coming months as they can’t afford to slip anymore. Meanwhile, the former Borussia Dortmund boss offered an update about the two players who are still seeking medical attention at Melwood.
As quoted by Liverpool’s official website, the boss said:
“Hopefully, especially Dejan, [they] can come back to training after when we come back on Sunday, that would be great.
“Same for Marko Grujic, who is close but not close enough to make the sessions with us, and it’s not nice for a player when you’re close but you see this, so do your stuff and train [with the group] in the moment you can do it again. So that’s all, there are no other reasons.”
Lovren missed the last two matches against Spurs and the spirit-sapping defeat at Hull City. Lucas Leiva stepped in to fill the 27-year-old’s void and made a grade against the north London club. The Croatian defender has bagged mixed reviews since his arrival from Southampton to Anfield. He has vastly improved under the tutelage of Klopp but it still error-prone. According to Squawka, Lovren has made two defensive mistakes this season, where one have led to a goal.
After impressing during the pre-season and gathering ample of praise from Klopp, it’s sad to see a young talent like Grujic missing a serious chunk of this campaign. But once he returns, he looks set to earn a fair amount of playing minutes under Klopp as his healthy blend of power and physicality is much-needed in Liverpool’s midfield.
Klopp’s men will be on the road to the King Power Stadium on February 27 to take on champions Leicester City.
